To work out how many tiles you need, measure the area, divide it by the size of one tile, then add about 10% for cuts and breakages. Here is the full method, with a worked example, so you order the right amount first time.
Step 1. Measure the area
Measure the length and width of the space in metres and multiply them. A room that is 4 m by 3 m is 12 square metres (m²).
For an L-shaped room, split it into rectangles, work out each one, and add them together. For walls, measure the height and width of each wall and subtract large openings such as windows and doors.
Step 2. Add a waste allowance
You will always cut some tiles, and a few may break. Allow extra:
- 10% for most straightforward layouts
- 15% for diagonal layouts, herringbone, small spaces with lots of cuts, and large-format tiles
It is also wise to keep a few spare tiles for future repairs. Tiles from a later order can come from a different batch with a slightly different shade, so it is much safer to buy everything at once.
In our example: 12 m² plus 10% is 13.2 m².
Step 3. Work out how many tiles or boxes
Tiles are sold by the box, and each box covers a set area. The box coverage is shown on the product page and on the box.
Example with a 600 x 1200 mm tile:
- One tile covers 0.6 x 1.2 = 0.72 m².
- If two tiles come in a box, one box covers 1.44 m².
- 13.2 m² divided by 1.44 m² per box is 9.17, so round up to 10 boxes.
Always round up to a full box.
Step 4. Don’t forget the extras
- Adhesive: coverage depends on the adhesive, the tile size and the trowel notch. Large-format tiles generally need more adhesive, so check the coverage printed on the bag.
- Grout: depends on joint width and tile size.
- Spacers, trims and sealant: edge trims, silicone for corners and movement joints.
- Primer or levelling compound if your surface needs preparing.
Use our calculator
On each product page you can enter your area and we will work out the boxes for you. If you are unsure, send us your room measurements on WhatsApp and we will double-check your order before you buy.
Quick answers
Does the tile size change how many I need? The area stays the same, but larger tiles often mean more cutting waste, so use the higher allowance.
